OUR CROWDFUNDING IS STARTING TOMORROW! COME BACK! :D ×

Violet Spin uses both ordinary and unusual means to bring the classic sound of the string quartet in new directions, crossing genre borders and breaking new ground.

Violet Spin boldly links jazz, groove and contemporary classical music to create an innovative string quartet sound.
Previously, Violet Spin has been invited to play at ORF Zentrum Linz (Broadcast Ö1) and was invited to renowned international festivals like Jazzfest Vienna, Java Jazz Festival/IDO and 12points Festival/SE. A concert with Indonesian jazz pianist Dwiki Dharmawan at Jazzfest Vienna was produced as a DVD, and followed by recordings of a film score (written by Irene Kepl) for Michael Ramsauer's film “Vergeben und Vergessen” and a commissioned composition for a dance piece('vonnunan'). Furthermore in 2015, Irene Kepl composed a completely new program of contemporary classical music for the 'Donaufestwochen Strudengau'. The first album is a statement: the unabashed delight of groove that the four of us have, flirting in different musical directions and then interwoven into an extraordinary sound experience.

CROWDFUNDING on wemakeit. We are enjoying preparation: T-Shirts? Bags? Other things?

    - Brainstorming: Logo and design for printing on the bags/t-shirts. Or will it be a slogan? Both? :-)

  • 19.09.2017

Sadly it's clear now: the Austrian Musicfond can't support us. BUT we still want to complete all our plans, so, …, CROWDFUNDING anyone, are you in?

We are very happy about our shiny new website! Read through the info and enjoy the images and the music.
The possibility to preorder our album is almost finished. We are just still in the process to convince the payment service provider to actually work with us, even though we are not a company with a record in the chamber of commerce but mere mortal musicians who would still love to be able to receive credit card payments. :D

String quartet Violet Spin from Vienna are brave outliers, trying to find a way to ditch the dots and function as a single improvising unit. They point the way to a new frontier for the string quartet.Cormac Larkin
      • All About Jazz
The quartet presented a richly varied and still coherent program comprising gypsy-derived and hot club-based pieces; a suite on Krtek, the mole (after Zdenêk Miller's Czech cartoons); "Grey," a wonderfully imaginative tone poem on urban industrial smog emulating arduous breathing; in other words, something for everyone. The members used their singing voices without fuss and evidently vividness, spontaneity and agility apparently was more important for this quartet than a polished sound.Henning Bolte

Balduin Sulzer

The performance fluctuated between composition and improvisation, using the dynamic possibilities from inaudibility up to infernal noise. Violinist Irene Kepl made a strong impression by scintillating as a violinist, with her compositional ideas as well as with an interesting interview.Balduin Sulzer
